A creaking wood floor is almost never a sick floor: it is a floor that has developed play. In most cases, it is fixed with talc, a candle or three well-placed screws, and I would rather show you these moves than bill you a call-out for that. Those who prefer to delegate know where to find me.
First step, always: locate the noise. Walk slowly, barefoot, shifting your weight from one board to the next. My workshop trick: have someone else walk while you watch the floor crouched down, against the light: you can see very clearly a board dropping half a millimetre under a step. Mark each noisy area with a bit of masking tape: the remedy depends on what is moving, and as you will see, there are four possible suspects.
1. Boards rubbing against each other. Wood swells and shrinks with the seasons: that is the famous wood movement. The edges tighten against each other, and every step makes the tongue sing in its groove. It is the most common creak, and the simplest to treat.
2. Fixings that have worked loose. On a nailed floor of a certain age, the wood has dried around the smooth nails: the board no longer grips, it slides along the nail at every step and drops back onto its . That tiny back-and-forth is the typical squeak of an old floor. I dealt with a whole upper floor in exactly that state, in Campan: a hundred square metres of oak nailed onto chipboard, restored room by room rather than lifted.

3. The missing expansion gap. A wood floor must be able to breathe around its whole perimeter: 8 to 10 mm between the boards and the walls, hidden by the skirting board. Fitted too tight (common on rushed floating installations), it goes into compression and creaks everywhere at once, sometimes with boards lifting. And compression does more than creak: in Campan, it had cracked an entire wood floor still locked in by its fitting wedges, freed and then brought back to new.
4. The subfloor itself. A badly packed batten that rocks, a that has sagged: there, the noise comes from below, and the floor is often springy as well as noisy. I come back to it further down, because it is no longer the same kind of job.
A floor that creaks and sags, that turns springy, where a gap widens under the skirting boards, where furniture leans: there, the problem is underneath: undersized joists, sagging, sometimes attacked by insects. That is no longer a handy tip, it is structural work, and I advise you not to touch it alone: you do not pack a structure by guesswork. In between, there is the old floor that is simply tired, creaking, scratched and greying all at once. At that stage, the right calculation is no longer the patch: it is the full renovation, which I explain in renovating an old wood floor.
On the budget side, if you would rather hand it all over: a floor specialist charges €45 to €65 an hour in 2026, and a localised refixing most often fits in half a day. My honest opinion: talc is a sticking plaster, the screw is a repair. And on an old wood floor, I am not chasing the silence of a brand-new one. A hundred-year-old floor that creaks a little, that is its nature, and trying to switch it off completely leads to absurd jobs. I treat what wears on the nerves (the corridor, the landing you cross at night, the bedroom doorway) and I let the rest live. And since nobody dares ask the question: yes, another board may start squeaking the following winter. That is wood, not bad workmanship. The moves above can be redone in ten minutes; and if the board is damaged beyond the noise, I wrote repairing a wood floor board for that.
For boards rubbing against each other, yes, and it is the first thing to try: it lubricates the edges and the silence is immediate. But it is a sticking plaster: it washes out with the first damp mop and the noise comes back. Paraffin wax lasts longer. For a board working loose on its nail, only a real fixing (a well-placed screw) solves the problem for good.
Almost never: the creaking comes from wood that lives and fixings that work loose, not from the structure. The warning signs are elsewhere: a floor that turns springy, a dip that forms, a gap that widens under the skirting boards, furniture that leans. There, it may be the joists, and that deserves a professional's eye.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Talc or paraffin wax in the joints, discreet screws filled over with wood filler or wax, a glued shim from below when a cellar or garage gives access to the underside of the floor: all of that is done without lifting a single board. You only take boards up to replace a dead one or rebuild the subfloor.
