November 2025 Hautes-Pyrénées 3 min read
Renovated upstairs floor, new panels laid on the Douglas fir joists

The project at a glance

The challenge
An old floor structure to rebuild entirely
The timbers
Original oak kept, new Douglas fir
The finish
Eco-friendly insulation, ceiling jointed and sanded
The result
A sound, stable and insulated upper floor

The starting point: getting back to a sound base

In old buildings, the upstairs floor is often the first thing to show its age: it slopes, it creaks, it moves. On this job, the goal was clear: renovate the floor completely to get back to a sound, perfectly stable base, before any other work.

The structure: keep the oak, reinforce the rest

The original oak beams were beautiful and still strong. So I kept them as the load-bearing structure, but doubled and reinforced them by : the original timberwork stays visible, but it no longer carries the load alone.

On top of them, I built a new Douglas fir , which allowed me to bring the whole storey perfectly level again. The floor is finished with moisture-resistant tongue-and-groove chipboard panels, screwed straight onto the joists, without intermediate .

Under the floor: insulation and a new ceiling

The underside of the floor was a key stage of the job. I fitted thermal and acoustic insulation in métisse panels, an eco-friendly insulation made from recycled textiles. The room below gains in comfort, and you no longer hear footsteps from the floor above.

To finish the job properly, I fitted the metal hangers, ran the conduits ready for the light fittings, put up the plasterboard, then jointed and sanded the new ceiling. The floor is now structurally sound, insulated and ready for the next stage of the renovation.

An old building to renovate?

Every old house has its own challenges. A floor that moves, insulation to redo, an upper storey to bring back level: let's talk about it, I will come and see for myself. I speak English, so feel free to call or write in English.
