A timber deck facing the Pyrenees
Species chosen for the mountains, a ventilated frame, hidden fixings.
The spot where you will drink your morning coffee facing the Pyrenees. I design and build timber decks made for the mountains: snow, frost and high-altitude sun do not scare them.
A timber deck is an extra room, outdoors. But in the mountains it has to be designed for the climate: not every timber lasts, and the invisible structure matters more than the boards you see.
First, the species. To stay outdoors all year round, a timber needs the right : naturally, like larch, or through treatment. I show you the options with their prices, without pushing you towards the most expensive one.
Then, the structure. The boards sit on , themselves laid on pedestals, ground screws or a slab depending on the ground. Air must flow underneath and water must drain away: this invisible part decides whether your deck lasts 10 or 30 years.
Finally, the details that change everything: stainless steel fixings, even spacing between the boards, clean edges around posts and walls. That is where you can tell a joiner did the work.
The gold-underlined words are explained on hover. All definitions are in the joinery glossary. To dig deeper: which timber for a deck in the mountains.
You call me and describe your project and your land. We set up a visit at your home.
The visit is free: I measure, study the ground and the exposure, and give you advice on the spot.
A firm price per square metre (a devis in French), frame included, with no surprises. You decide in your own time.
Frame, boards, finishing touches. I leave the site clean, and we walk through it together at the end.
| Timber deck, frame and installation included | €120 to €250 per m² |
The price depends on the species you choose, the ground (at ground level or raised) and the complexity of the shape. The detailed quote (devis) is free, and the price I give is firm.
Douglas fir and larch are my safe bets here: naturally durable, good-looking, and reasonably priced. Pressure-treated timber is the budget option, tropical hardwoods the long-life option. The right choice depends on exposure, use and budget: I explain everything before you decide.
Yes, all woods grey in the sun: it is a change of colour, not a loss of strength. If you like the original shade, a saturating oil applied every 1 to 3 years keeps it. If you like the silvery grey, there is almost nothing to do.
An uncovered deck at ground level often needs nothing at all. As soon as it is raised or covers a large area, a prior declaration (déclaration préalable) may be required, depending on your commune. I check for you and help you fill in the paperwork if needed.
With a suitable species and, above all, a well-ventilated frame, count on 20 to 30 years, sometimes more. Most decks that rot quickly are badly designed: wood in contact with the soil, standing water, no airflow. It is the structure you never see that determines how long it lasts.
Yes: on a concrete slab with adjustable pedestals, on natural ground with ground screws or concrete pads, or raised on posts for sloping plots, which are common in our valleys. The visit is when we choose the right technique.

Sanding, repairs and a natural finish to bring back the original charm.
Call me and let's talk it over. The visit and the quote are free, and the decision is yours. I speak English, so feel free to call or write in English.
